Nassau is the capital and largest city of the Bahamas, with a population of over 274,400 people. It serves as the center of commerce, education, law, administration and media in the country. Nassau is situated on the island of New Providence and was named in honor of William III of England. The city's modern growth began in the late 18th century due to the influx of thousands of Loyalists and their slaves to the Bahamas.
