About Thimphu |
Thimphu is the capital of Bhutan, located in the west-central part of the country in the Himalayas on the Raidak River at an altitude of 7,000 feet. It was designated as the official seat of government in 1962 and underwent a large construction program with Indian aid. Tashi Chho dzong, a traditional fortified monastery, is one of the finest examples of Bhutanese architecture and now houses the offices of the royal government. The city is surrounded by terraced fields, and agriculture is a high priority, with rice, corn, and wheat as the main crops. Lumbering is also important, and there is a sawmill in the city. A hydroelectric power plant started operation in 1966 and the city has an airfield and the Indo-Bhutan National Highway, which connects it to Phuntsholing, the main gateway into Bhutan from India. |
