Gaborone is the capital and largest city of Botswana. It was previously called Gaberones until 1969. The city was chosen as the seat of government in 1965, a year before Botswana's independence from Britain. It is located on the Cape-Zimbabwe railway and is home to government offices, parliament buildings, health facilities, a thermal power station, and an airport. Gaborone is also the site of the University of Botswana, which was founded in 1976 and it has a National Museum and Art Gallery, which includes departments of natural history, archaeology, and prehistory. The population of Gaborone in 2001 was 186,007 and in 2011 it was 231,592.
