London Docklands is a former port area along the River Thames in London that covers nearly 9 square miles of riverfront. It includes the boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Newham, Southwark, Lewisham, and Greenwich. The Docklands was the primary hub of British seaborne trade for centuries, but in the latter half of the 20th century, many of the manufacturing plants and wharves were abandoned or converted into residential and commercial developments. The Port of London Authority (PLA) was established in 1909 and oversaw the construction of the King George V Dock in 1921. However, due to bombing damage during WWII and competition from other deepwater ports, the Docklands declined in the latter part of the 20th century. In the late 1960s, the PLA sold riverfront properties and new residential, commercial, and marina developments were built in the area.
