Hā'il is a town located in the northwest of Saudi Arabia. It is situated between Mount Shammar to the north and Mount Salma to the south, and it is on one of the main routes for people making a pilgrimage from Iraq to Mecca. Hā'il became more important than the previous administrative center of the region, Fayd, in the mid-19th century after the establishment of the local dynasty of Ibn Rashīd. Hā'il grew in importance and influence because of its relationship with the Ottoman government and its control of the main pilgrimage route from the east, it even rivaled Riyadh in importance. In the 1890s, Hā'il was the capital of all desert Arabia. However, the family feuds of the local Ibn Rashīd dynasty and its constant wars with its neighbors led to the town's collapse in 1921 under attack by Ibn Sa'ūd, the founder of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Now, Hā'il is not as important as it used to be, it's mainly a regional market and oasis that produces dates, fruit, and grain. The population of the city is around 267,005 (2004 estimate).
