Freetown is the capital, chief port, and largest city of Sierra Leone. It is located on the Sierra Leone Peninsula and is surrounded by wooded hills. Freetown was founded in 1787 by an English abolitionist, Granville Sharp, as a haven for African slaves who were freed and destitute in England. It was later settled by freed slaves from Nova Scotia, Jamaica, and other captured slave ships. In 1821, Freetown became the seat of government for all of Great Britain’s West African possessions, and it remained so until 1874. In 1961, it was officially declared the capital of Sierra Leone. Freetown has an excellent natural harbor and deep-water docking facilities. The city is a major commercial and transportation center, with exports that include palm oil, cocoa, coffee, ginger, and kola nuts. It also has limited industries, such as diamond cutting, confectionery, paint, shoe production, rice milling, and fish packing. The Guma Dam construction in the city solved the long-standing water problem and provided more electrical power. The city is connected by air via Hastings Airfield and Lungi International Airport across the Sierra Leone River.
