The Battle of Omdurman was fought in 1898 and was a decisive military engagement where Anglo-Egyptian forces defeated the forces of the Mahdist leader ʿAbd Allāh, thereby winning Sudanese territory that the Mahdists had dominated since 1881. The Mahdism movement was born out of discontent among Sudanese people against the actions of the Egyptian government and its governor-general Charles George Gordon, who had disrupted the Sudanese economy by breaking up slave markets and imprisoning traders. The leader of the Mahdist movement, Muḥammad Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd Allāh, claimed to be the "Right-Guided One" appointed by God to restore traditional Islam and led his followers in a series of victories against the Egyptian government. The Mahdists besieged Khartoum, the seat of the Egyptian government in Sudan, but were eventually defeated in the Battle of Omdurman.
