Paramaribo is the largest city, capital, and chief port of Suriname, a country located in South America. It is situated on the Suriname River, 9 miles from the Atlantic Ocean and is built on a shingle reef that stands 16 feet above the river at low tide, with access from the ocean limited by a sandbar that allows a depth of about 20 feet. The city has a rich history and is known for its distinctive Dutch colonial architecture and a canal system that still remain. The historic center of Paramaribo was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2002 for its fusion of European and local elements. Some notable buildings include the 17th-century Fort Zeelandia, St. Peter and Paul Cathedral and De Waag. The city is also home to many institutions of learning including the Anton de Kom University of Suriname, Polytechnic College of Suriname and the Centre for Agricultural Research in Suriname.
