Fujairah is a constituent emirate of the United Arab Emirates, located on the east side of the Musandam Peninsula towards the Gulf of Oman. Its history has been marked by a power struggle between the Qasimi sheikhdom of Sharjah, which annexed the area in 1850, and the Sharqi sheikh of Fujairah, who desired independence. Fujairah was not considered independent by Great Britain in the 19th century, but was considered a part of Sharjah. In 1952, the British government accepted Fujairah as an autonomous state and it became a member of the proposed Federation of Arab Emirates. In 1971, it became a constituent emirate of the newly independent United Arab Emirates. Fujairah is one of the country's poorer states, with agriculture and fishing being the main sources of income. The principal urban center is Fujairah town, which has become a major transshipment point since the opening of its container port in the 1980s. Dibba, located in the northern section of the emirate, is also part of Fujairah. The emirate has a small international airport and good road connections to other areas.
