Harare, formerly known as Salisbury, is the capital city of Zimbabwe. It was founded in 1890 by the British South Africa Company and was named after Lord Salisbury, the British Prime Minister at the time. The name Harare is derived from that of Chief Neharawe, who was occupying the hill on which the city was built when the Pioneer Column arrived. Harare became a municipality in 1897 and developed into a market and mining center after the arrival of the railway from the port of Beira, Mozambique in 1899. It was chartered as a city in 1935. Industrialization during and after World War II led to an influx of population. The city has a modern and well-planned layout with multistoried buildings and tree-lined avenues. It is home to Anglican and Roman Catholic cathedrals, a Dutch Reformed church, the Queen Victoria Memorial Library and Museum, the National Archives, the University of Zimbabwe, and the Rhodes National Gallery. Harare is located at an elevation of 4,865 feet and has a temperate climate. It serves as a hub of transportation, and is the center of Zimbabwe's industry and commerce.
